Portrait Study: Saturday
Portrait study in clay with guest teacher Jenny Pollak
Term 2 – 8 weeks, Saturdays 1pm – 5pm
This class is an 8 week course in which students will be working from a model to create a finished clay bust ready to be fired.
The classes will be aimed at exploring how form can be used as a vehicle for communicating character and emotion. Students will be encouraged to broaden their observational skills with a focus on developing a sculptural language which conveys character by playing with such devices as rhythm, texture, abstraction, emphasis and repetition, paying attention to how the great sculptors in history have used form in all its various articulations as a means of expression.
While the class is not focused on creating a realistic likeness it is intended that the student will explore ways in which to convey emotion in an expressive reading of the subject with specific attention to form. For those wishing to improve their understanding of the hands as a means of expressing character or emotion there will be the opportunity to incorporate the hand as a gesture within the bust.
As in her life class, Jenny will be encouraging students to consider what kind of sculptural language they wish to develop as they work towards building a stronger arts practice.
