SUMMARY:7 Week Stone Carving with Elena Murgia - Monday EVE
DESCRIPTION:Please note there will be no class on 8 June due to the public holiday. \nThis brief course will help students undertake the basic techniques of carving. Learn how to remove step by step the material that is surrounding a sculpture\, starting from unveiling the basic volumes connected together in harmonious composition and the beginnings of the finishing process where time permits. \nCarving is a magical process that pursues the soothing of the soul and detaches ourselves from the modern chaotic life. It’s a way to connect to nature and it informs a sense of space\, training the eye and the mind to see in depth! \nAlabaster stone will be available to purchase at an additional cost to the course fee. Elena will have a good selection of stones to choose from which are best suited for the duration of this course. \nStudents are also welcome to bring work in progress stone sculptures\, including marble works you may be currently working on. Elena can guide you in the next steps of your stone carvings. \nAbout Elena:\nElena Murgia is an Italian born artist. After studying ceramics in London\, her sculpting journey started at the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School in 2017. \nShe undertook marble carving classes under the guidance of Usama Alnassar who continues to mentor her.  Elena has also been mentored and trained by TBSSS teacher Wendy Black\, whom Elena continues to assist on a Wednesday during term time. \nElena participates in national prizes and group exhibitions around the country and had her first solo exhibition in December 2023 at the Clara Street Gallery showcasing works in marble\, alabaster\, bronze and porcelain. \nThrough her sculpture she explores the dichotomy between quality and image\, inner beauty and the masks we wear to conform to the world\, responding to both feminine and the feminist\, her past and her present. \nLimited places.

SUMMARY:Life Drawing for Sculptors with Simon Harris
DESCRIPTION:Please note there will be no classes running on 23 May and 6 June\, this is a 6 week class running over 8 weeks. \nThis 6-week* life drawing course focuses on learning to see and draw the human figure as a three-dimensional\, sculptural form. Working from a live model each week\, sessions combine guided demonstrations\, short warm-up studies and longer poses\, with optional group critique. Through a structured progression covering gesture\, proportion\, light\, anatomy and spatial depth\, students strengthen observational drawing skills and spatial awareness\, culminating in a sustained final figure study that supports and enriches sculptural practice. \nBasic drawing materials will be provided. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring any of their preferred materials with them. \nClass Structure: \nEach week: Begin with some theory and/or demonstration from Simon. Start with some 1 and 2 minute warm-up poses\, then move to longer poses\, finishing in week 6 with a single long pose. Close each week with a group critique\, inviting the group to show and discuss their best drawings (critique optional). \nPrimary Goal: To learn how to see and draw form\, particularly the planes of a three dimensional figure and the effects of light and shade. Also to learn some basics of drawing and anatomy and to strengthen students’ spatial awareness to enhance their sculptural practice. \nWeek 1 — Gesture as Mass & Movement Focus: Capturing the weight\, energy\, and overall movement of the figure\, using broad strokes\, avoiding outlines or too much detail. \nWeek 2 — Proportion & Structural Framework Focus: Building a structural ‘armature’ in the drawing – centre of gravity\, balance\, stance and proportional landmarks. Drawings function as scaffolding for form\, rather than surface description. \nWeek 3 — Planes\, Simplification & Light Focus: Reducing the figure to interlocking planes and using basic light and shadow to clarify volume – no tonal polishing. \nWeek 4 — Sculptural Anatomy I: Torso as Mass Focus: The ribcage and pelvis\, and their relationship within different poses\, emphasising tilt\, rotation and compression. \nWeek 5 — Sculptural Anatomy II: Limbs\, Hands & Feet Focus: Constructing limbs\, hands and feet as simple masses – using cylinders\, wedges and blocks to emphasis load-bearing and articulation. \nWeek 6 — Foreshortening\, Depth & Final Integrated Study Focus: Understanding the figure as a solid object occupying real space\, not a flat image. Students integrate gesture\, structure\, planes\, light\, anatomy and composition into a single extended pose. \nAbout Simon: \nAlthough Simon Harris has an extensive background in graphics and illustration\, his focus has recently shifted to sculpture since studying at Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School. \nSimon’s early career as a commercial artist saw him create storyboards\, logos and editorial illustrations for Australian publications including a cover and several double page illustrations for Time magazine. \nSince 2003 he has been a lecturer at Billy Blue College of Design (now part of Torrens University) and still teaches illustration there on a part-time basis. \nFollowing a Covid lockdown epiphany\, Simon concentrated on his fine art practice\, exploring figurative forms drawn with graphite on paper. His drawings were finalists in several art prizes including the North Sydney Prize and the prestigious Dobell Drawing Prize. \nSimon brings an analytical eye and sculptural awareness to the time honoured process of drawing the live model.

SUMMARY:5 Week Modelling the Figure in Clay with Monika Scarrabelotti
DESCRIPTION:Join artist and teacher Monika Scarrabelotti for our upcoming Sunday life study – Modelling the Figure in Clay. \nLose yourself in the seductive tactile nature of clay modelling and observe all the tiny nuances and beautiful rhythms of the human body.  Learn to sculpt the human form from life! \nThe life study is a fantastic opportunity for artists and students to deepen their understanding of anatomy and proportion\, discover new ways of seeing\, and gain inspiration for future works. \nRun every Sunday over five weeks\, the first class will include life drawing and short sculptural studies in clay.  The remaining four classes will focus on the model in the same pose\, allowing students ample time to immerse themselves in the sculpture.  The pose chosen will try to accommodate both sculptures built on armatures and ceramic works. \nMonika will guide her students through the workshop with expertise and enthusiasm.  Monika likes to teach with active demonstrations\, and encourages students to explore sculptural elements such as gesture\, tension and rhythm.   Her classes are relaxed and fun whilst remaining a focused and supportive creative environment. \nAll skill levels are welcome in this workshop\, though some prior art making experience is recommended.  Beginners ready to dive into the deep end of traditional artistic tuition will learn about anatomy and proportion\, clay modelling techniques\, handling of tools\, and armature building. \nExperienced artists can use this workshop to explore new ways of working\, and hone their practice. The model may be used to represent emotional or stylistic interpretations of the body\, rather than working purely from observation. \nPlease note that in order to have ample time working from the model\, this workshop does not include mould making\, casting\, or preparation for firing.

SUMMARY:Alabaster Carving with Carol Crawford 2026 - Intermediate Course
DESCRIPTION:A unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of alabaster carving and learn from popular guest teacher Carol Crawford. \nCarol is a specialist alabaster sculptor who interprets the raw stone to create soft\, interlocking organic forms. Carol will be assisted by artist Elena Murgia\, who is a specialist stone carver.  For this weekend course Carol and Elena will guide you on the use of different hand tools\, finishing/ polishing techniques\, and how to realise a beautiful soft abstracted form out of the rough stone you have chosen. \nAlabaster is a very fine\, stable\, sometimes translucent stone that can be easily carved. For this workshop you will be working with beautiful white alabaster (translucent and opaque) shipped all the way from Italy. \nThis is a workshop not to be missed! Places are strictly limited and early bookings are encouraged for this popular course. \n* Please note that this is an intermediate course – some sculpture or stone carving experience is necessary to get the most out of this course. This two day course will give participants a good foundation to create a unique alabaster sculpture.  As each person works at an individual pace\, some people may find they need a bit more time to complete their sculpture and this can be done by booking in for some casual workshop classes during term time at TBSSS. \nFees: TBC \nEach participant will be required to start a new sculpture for this special workshop to experience Carol’s unique interpretation.    \nVisit Carol’s website: www.carolcrawfordsculpture.net or her instagram account: _carolcrawford_.
