Student Achievements – Simon Harris

Congratulations to TBSSS Wednesday AM student Simon Harris who was recently selected as a finalist in the Eden Gardens ‘Eden Unearthed’ sculpture competition.

Eden Gardens is a large garden centre in Ryde, owned by patrons of the arts Anna and Simon Ainsworth.

Simon’s sculpture, Naiad, was constructed with Pal Tiya sculpting cement. Pal Tiya can be sculpted like wet clay for the first half hour after mixing, then it can be carved and filed as it hardens. It is cured by keeping it wet, reaching full strength after 28 days. It is then painted with exterior acrylic paints.

Simon created the seven ‘rocks’ separately and bolted them together on site. Although the sculpture is hollow it still weighs a hefty 120kgs.

Naiad is on display at Eden Gardens until April 2024 near the Daffodil Garden at the top of the stream.
