59th Anniversary of Ethos

Tom Bass’ iconic Canberra sculpture, Ethos (located outside the ACT Legislative Assembly), marked its 59th anniversary just before the new year, in December 2020.

The sculpture, crafted to represent the ‘spirit of the community’, was built from copper and was unveiled in 1961.

ABC News Canberra has put together a Classic Canberra video to mark the occasion, featuring footage of Tom working on the sculpture and its subsequent unveiling.

You can view the view the video here.

The cement plinth under the statue holds a time capsule with an old copy of The Canberra Times, an annual report from the Canberra Chamber of Commerce, and a list of contributors to the Canberra Chamber of Commerce.
