Reflections on our wonderful January Marble Workshops

It was lovely to have Usama Alnassar back again from Carrara in Italy after a 2 year Covid break. The 3 large crates of marble and alabaster which arrived in August, 2022 from Carrara, laid waiting to be unsealed and seized upon by eager students.

As usual, the students loved working with Usama. Here are some student reviews:

It seemed extra special to be using the beautiful white statuario marble from Cararra, cut from the same white mountains accessed by Michelangelo for his marble pieces. Sadly, says Usama, the vein of statuario marble at Carrara is getting scarce, although odd deposits are still being uncovered at Carrara from time to time. This pure white marble is highly valued by artists and for commercial uses alike. Artists particularly prize it for its tensile strength, its receptivity to detail and it beautiful crystalline quality.

Many thanks to Usama for an inspiring and enjoyable month of carving at Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School.  And a big thank you to the students who participated, both newcomers and those who have also participated in previous years.
