Our founder, Tom Bass, used to say ‘I love the sound of people at work.’ And last month, when Paul Hopmeier ran his very popular limestone carving masterclass at TBSSS, the sound of mallets, chisels and saws rang out through the studio.

Over three days in April, veteran limestone-whisperer Paul Hopemeier returned to TBSSS to run his yearly masterclass.

Each student begins with a large 290 x 660 x 660mm limestone block (from the Mt Gambier quarry) and uses a variety of tools – from saws to files – to shape their stone into a form of their choosing. This year students produced everything from limestone book-stacks, turrets, mushrooms and portraits to abstract forms.

One of the real treats of taking Paul’s workshop is gathering around the table at tea time whilst Paul regales students with limestone stories from far and wide – all the way from West Papua to the MCA. He even brings his own slide projector!

TBSSS looks forward to welcoming Paul back in 2022.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
