Terms & Conditions
Conditions of Enrolment
- Fees include all basic materials, tools, and model fees (where applicable)
- Classes are small — minimum 6, maximum 12 students. We reserve the right to cancel a class if student enrolments are below 6. In the case of class cancellation, refunds will be issued.
- See below Refund and Cancellation Policy for information about making up missed classes. Once your enrolment has been processed refunds are not made, but you can apply for a transfer credit in exceptional circumstances.
- Students must attend the first class of the Term workshop they are enrolled in
- Workshop enrolment does not entitle open access to the studio outside Term class times
- TBSSS has a Workplace Health & Safety Management Plan that the teachers and staff are familiar with. All new students will have to sign a WHS form in their first workshop (see end of this document for the form details). Ensure that you wear closed toed shoes, bring a P2 dust mask to use when sweeping plaster and stone dust at the end of class, and always sign in as you enter the studio.
- Due to space restrictions, works or materials you leave at the school can only be stored for one term following your current enrolment whether in a term or special workshop. Works will then will be disposed of, as will exhibited works unclaimed for more than 6 weeks. Please take home any sculptures or stone you aren’t currently working on (please note studio materials and equipment must remain in the studio).
Sound Studio Practice
While working on your sculpture we ask that you participate in the efficient operation of the Studio by:
- Helping to maintain the clay. This clay has been in circulation for over 50 years and most of Tom Bass’ sculptures and those in the TBSSS have been made from this clay.
- Ask questions about the use and maintenance of any tools/equipment that you are unfamiliar with.
- Respecting the time and space of other students, and the school’s facilities.
- Understanding that your teacher’s ability to attend to you will depend on student needs, but over time will be given equally to each student.
- Following safe practice (see WH&S information below).
- Switching off your mobile phone or switching it to ‘silent’.
- Cleaning your work area, tools, and equipment during and after class.
- Taking home finished works till the Annual Studio Exhibition — unfinished sculptures that have not been touched for 6 months will be disposed of as TBSSS sees fit.
- Respecting artistic practice by maintaining concentration during sculpting periods.
Refunds & Cancellations
In general, we can’t provide refunds for our Term Workshops, Special Workshops, or any other classes at the school. TBSSS is a not-for-profit organisation, and we operate with only a small margin between our student fees and operational costs, so it would create significant financial losses when the school has already committed to run a given class for the term.
Refunds
In accordance with the Australian Consumer Law, refunds will be provided if:
- The service was not delivered with acceptable care and skill (e.g., no teacher present).
- The service was unfit for the purpose requested (e.g., incorrect course materials provided).
- The service was not delivered within a reasonable time when there was no agreed completion date. (e.g., the workshop was cancelled)
When you book in for a class, you are purchasing a ticket to a workshop on a specific time and date—if you cannot attend that time, or change your mind, you aren’t entitled to a refund.
Make-up Classes
However, you are welcome to make up a missed Term Workshop class, which is free of charge, provided it is within the same term, you contact us beforehand to book in, and there is space in the other timeslot. We hope that students can make use of this system, and encourage you to attend for a full booking!
Please be aware that students aren’t entitled to make-up classes, and this is something that many other schools don’t offer. The office staff and teachers will aim to accommodate requests wherever possible.
Make-up classes aren’t possible for Special Workshops due to their limited availability and specialised nature.
Term Transfers
In exceptional circumstances, we may be able to offer a Term Transfer for a Term Workshop booking. Your situation qualifies as exceptional (e.g., medical emergencies or bereavement), with supporting evidence (e.g., medical certificate, travel disruption notice). All exceptional circumstances are reviewed case-by-case by TBSSS. Circumstances not eligible for review include travel or job change, not calling before class is missed, change of mind.
