Learn the principals of modelling the figure in clay! Designed to develop the student’s understanding of the form and structure of the human body, this course will be an intensive life study focusing on human anatomy and observation.

Working from a model in a standing pose for seven weeks, students will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of anatomy, the rhythms and movable masses of the body, proportion and language of sculptural form. Students will develop skills in armature building, clay modelling and training of the observational eye. In order to have optimal time with a model, this course is intended as an intensive life study only, not to complete a finished sculpture.

Students who would like to translate their work into a cast can do so by enrolling in a workshop class at the Tom Bass Studio. Suitable for beginners through to advanced levels, this course will teach the foundations of the classical figure in sculpture.

Term 1 – 2023: Double Figure Life Study with Jenny Pollak

Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School 1A Clara Street, Erskineville, NSW

Sundays: 12 February – 2 April (8 weeks), 10:00am – 3:30pm

$880.30 (Earlybird)
$980.30 (General)

The relationship between two figures can give us a unique insight into the abstract possibilities of space and form. This workshop will encourage the student to look for new and interesting solutions to the challenges of depicting the complexity of two bodies in relationship to each other, bringing a fresh eye to the exploration of rhythm, negative space, mass and balance.

Jenny will guide both the beginner and the more experienced artist through the process involved in working with clay from the life model. Students will be encouraged to push their work beyond a merely faithful representation of the body and develop a more personal language and means of expression.

During this 8 week course students will have time to bring their work to a point where it is ready to be fired, exploiting the facility and beauty of clay as a material that can be transformed from the raw and impermanent to a final and enduring sculptural piece.
